I wasn’t blessed with a green thumb. It makes me sad to admit that plants seem to come to a very quick, tragic end under my loving care. But, that doesn’t stop me from trying. I love fresh flowers in my house. I just don’t seem to have the talent to grow them myself.
Imagine my delight when I realized there’s an amazing flower farm just down the road outside of Oxford, Ohio. Morning Sun Flower Farm was started two years ago by Mindy and Josh on a picturesque country hillside. The farm is dedicated to growing local, organic flowers to supply the family’s flower shop, Two Little Buds Florist, located in Fairfield Township.

Flowers vary seasonally and include gorgeous dahlias, vibrant snapdragons, beautiful chrysanthemums, and so many more varieties. Even better, the farm is open by appointment for visitors or a lucky few can participate in a seasonal Farm-to-Vase Workshop.

A few weeks ago, I was invited to the summer workshop. Lucky me! I pulled on my polka dot wellies (mud boots) and headed to the farm for a beautiful evening.
A quick drive to Oxford through the rolling countryside was a scenic prelude. Once I arrived, I was greeted by beautiful horses grazing in the field, and the couple’s friendly French and English Bulldogs. After a short walk down the hill, the flower field and hoop house came into view.

I grabbed a quick beverage of my choosing, and settled in under the tent. Soothing and tranquil live music perfectly complemented the setting. Once guests are acquainted with the farm, dinner was served. We dug into delicious local barbeque, topped off with donut holes for dessert.

After our bellies were full, Mindy gave the group a quick demo of how to build a flower arrangement. She made it look so easy! We were given aprons and sheers to cut our flowers. And with our imagination flowing, she let us loose in the field.

Guests can cut whichever flowers speak to them and arrange them in a unique design all their own. Definitely fun, but I must admit, I certainly don’t have the practiced hand and skill of Mindy and her team. All things considered, I was pretty proud of my final arrangement. And I proudly brought it home to fill my house with fresh color for the next week.
If flowers are your thing, (whether you can grow them or not), be sure to make the short drive out to Morning Sun Flower Farm for a farm-to-vase workshop. You won’t be disappointed. Details on upcoming classes can be found here. Space is limited. Or stop by their flower shop, Two Little Buds Florist, for gorgeous local flowers any day of the week.
