Oxford's Buzzing New Mural

The Hive Mural is a vibrant and colorful addition to the Oxford community

Local artist, Joe Prescher, has turned an alley into his own canvas and designed a mural to make it feel like people are walking inside a giant beehive. 

The Concept

During the summer of 2024, Joe Prescher started work on the Hive Mural, a massive work of art spanning two walls in the alleyway of Mac & Joe's. The concept behind the mural is community — something to give everyone the opportunity to look at and participate in. 

The idea of painting a beehive comes from Oxford’s own history with beekeeping. Lorenzo Langstroth, “The Father of American Beekeeping,” invented the Langstroth hive which revolutionized the honey industry while living in Oxford. Langstroth Cottage is now a National Historic Landmark on the Western Campus.

The Process

The mural is being done in three phases which included painting the honeycomb, adding giant bees, and filling in the honeycombs with the help of the community. Passersby have the opportunity to learn more about the mural, while adding vibrant hues of yellow to the honeycomb.
